Combined B.S./B.A. & Professional Certificates in Accounting or Finance

Employers look for students who possess the knowledge and skills to create opportunites for the future.  Although UCSD graduates are prized for their superior education, they are occasionally overlooked for lack of practical skills that can be quickly applied to solve business problems.  UCSD Extension is chartered to narrow this gap, and offers two professional certificates, Financial Management and Accounting, that not only provide practical skills in these fields, but also support four nationally recognized professional licenses -- the CPA (Certified Public Accountant), the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst), the CIA (Certified Internal Auditor), and the CMA (Certified Management Accountant).

UCSD Economics and Management Science majors can pursue one, or both of these certificates while completing their undergraduate degrees.  To facilitate this, many of the degree requirements for Economics and Management Science have been approved as substitutes for Extension certificate requirements.  Moreover, the combination of both an Economics degree and Professional Certificate is one of the best ways to prepare for the standardized, national licensing exams.  No special application process or permissions are necessary to enroll in Extension courses.  In addition, through a reciprocal arrangement between the University and Extension, a limited number of complimentary enrollments are available to full-time UCSD students.

What can Extension do for you, that you may not be receiving in your main campus classes?

  • Instruction: Instructors are professionals who currently work in the field that they are teaching, providing you a rare insight to the current market trends and issues facing that industry.

  • Networking: Sit side by side with others who also are currently working in the field and are in class to update their skills, gain new knowledge necessary to advance their careers or like you just learning more about that business.

  • Acquire: A real-world understanding of business practices from industry professional (both instructors and students).

  • Leverage: Creatively leverage your learning experience at Extension in your efforts to find employment by demonstrating current job skills.

  • Join a professional learning community of professionals in your area of interest.

How it Works

Students completing a Certificate program are in a position to pursue credentialing from the appropriate professional association immediately or soon after graduation.

To take advantage of this arrangement, students should:

  1. Review the certificate programs section of an Extension catalog to find out when the necessary certificate courses are scheduled to be offered during the coming year.

  2. Work out a personal plan to complete this coursework by the time they expect to graduate from UCSD, taking into account their campus course workload and any employment obligations.

  3. Register for the desired certificate (the application fee is $50).  By registering for the certificate, you will receive notification of any changes in course scheduling and early enrollment privileges for impacted courses.

  4. Register each quarter directly with Extension (see the catalog for procedures) to enroll in the course or courses identified on the personal plan

Upon completion of all coursework, including the specified Economics courses, Extension will verify that the requirements of this arrangement have been met, and issue certification.

Subsidized Enrollment Benefits

UCSD Extension offers a limited number of complimentary enrollments to full-time UCSD seniors, juniors, and sophomores, to enroll in one course for up to $270 (students must pay anything over that amount) on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Students must present their student identification to enroll complimentary.  Enrollments under this program are taken on one specific day each quarter as identified in the quarterly catalog (see "Complimentary Enrollment" under General Information). On the designated day, line up at outside of Extenstion Building C. The office will open at 8am.
