Economics 199
Independent Study

This course involves reading or research under the direction of an Economics Department faculty member (lecturers and visitors are not permitted to supervise). In order to get academic credit in the economics department for independent study, you essentially have to do academic work comparable to what you would do in an upper division economics course. Since the only formal requirement is that you do a research paper, that paper has to represent a lot of work and be substantial. It is not easy to do this unless you have a topic you want to work on and have a faculty advisor who can knowledgably assist you. That is why most faculty ask prospective independent research or internship students to have an idea about what they want to research before they'll even discuss supervising them.

Check the faculty page for a list of faculty and research interests.

Qualifications: A student must have completed at least 90 units of undergraduate study and must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better.

Procedures

  1. Discuss with a faculty member the possibility of a Special Studies project in the faculty member's field of competence.

  2. If the faculty member agrees to working on a Special Studies project with you, obtain an "Application for UCSD Special Studies Course Enrollment" from one of the Undergraduate Advisors in SH 245.

  3. Complete the appropriate sections of the form and return it to the Undergraduate Advisor.

  4. Upon final department approval, take the form to the Registrar's Office to enroll in the course.
