Changes to the Economics Lower-Division Sequence
Effective December 2003

PDF Version

SUMMARY

The Economics Department just recently received approval from the Academic Senate to renumber the Econ 1A-B-C Elements of Economics sequence, effective Summer 2004. All three courses WILL be offered in the new structure in Summer 2004.

The renumbering will be as follows:

Econ 1 (formerly 1A): will concern microeconomics
Econ 2 (formerly 1C): will concern microeconomics applications
Econ 3 (formerly 1B): will concern macroeconomics

WHY? The restructuring was done to follow the logical flow of many principles of economics textbooks (microeconomics, applications, then macroeconomics).

RULES FOR DEPARTMENT MAJORS & MINORS

  • Students who have completed Econ 1A-B (or the equivalent elsewhere) prior to Summer 2004 will be waived from
Econ 2-applications by the Econ department. Students who have completed Econ 1A-B, but will not graduate prior to Summer 2004 are strongly encouraged to take Econ 2.

  • Students who have completed 1A-micro (or the equivalent elsewhere), but not Econ 1B-macro, prior to Summer 2004, will be required to take Econ 2-applications and 3-macro.

  • Students who have completed 1B-macro (or the equivalent elsewhere), but not Econ 1A-micro, prior to Summer 2004, will be required to take Econ 1-micro and 2-applications.

  • Students who have not completed either Econ 1A or 1B prior to Summer 2004 will be required to take Econ 1-2-3.

TRANSFER STUDENTS entering Fall 2004 and later

All transfer students should take Econ 2 in their first quarter at UCSD.

The Econ department will not enforce Econ 2 as a prerequisite for core courses Econ 110A Macroeconomics and Econ 120A Econometrics, and the following electives that do not have any upper-division prerequisites: 101, 111, 114, 116, 136, 138A-B, 139, 145, 161, 163, and 165.

It is recommended that students majoring in Economics or Management Science complete the core courses first; however, the aforementioned electives will be available to students as an alternative option. Please keep in mind that many Econ electives require core courses as prerequisites.

Therefore, a recommended first-year quarter-by-quarter plan for Economics transfer students is as follows (assuming that Econ introductory micro and macro, and Math prerequisites have been completed). Please keep in mind that this is just one option.
